Madeo (Mother) Review

MADEO(Mother)-2009

You just don't mess with my son....

 Mother
(2009) on IMDb

Having already seen two of Bong Joo Ho's movies 'Memories of Murder' and 'Snowpiercer', two masterpieces in their own right, I went into this movie with high expectations, and oh boy did it just satisfy my expectations,it sometimes even managed to exceed them.

Hye-ja Kim plays the role of the titular mother, who makes a living by selling herbs, and giving acupuncture. When her son, Yoon do-joon is arrested, on the suspicion of murdering a girl, for rejecting his advances, based on reports that he was last seen drunk and in a horny state, in the vicinity of the area where the body was found, then it's upto the mother to prove his innocence.

With the run-time a little over two hours, the movie takes a twists and turns filled ride leaving you perpetually at the edge of your seat, making you guess about how things are going to turn out. And all this helmed by an extraordinary performance by Hye-ja Kim. Although the stakes this time are lower and far more personal than the case in Memories of murder, which impacted the entire nation, yet it is her performance which elevates this movie to a level far above than that of just another whodunit. Right from the beginning, that weird and forlorn dance in the field, played out of context, to the ending where she discovers something, which I can't say without spoiling the movie, her character keeps on evolving taking us to unimaginable emotional depths, in the end reminding us of what importance a mother is in a child's life.

RATING-  8/10
