Brightburn deals with an interesting concept, what if Superman turned out evil, what if that kid from outer space had no good intentions.

The Breyers are a childless couple, wishing that someday they also get to enjoy the joy of starting a family. We start with them making, ahem, yet another attempt of being parents, when an infant comes in from the skies in a spacecraft. They bring him in and raise him as their own son, locking the space craft away in their barn. Cut to about a decade later and we see Brandon Breyer grown up into what seems to  be the ideal kid every parents dream, a sizeable knowledge beyond his years and helping hand around the house. But one night the spacecraft calls for Brandon and things start going south pretty fast.

Gotta say it upfront, its no masterpiece, and it stumbles a lot along the way, but it never really fails at what its meant to be. Cheap Popcorn for the soul. A fun movie with, quite a few decent kills. Though there’s an issue I have got a gripe about, its about the lack of any decent foil to Brandon. He spends the entire duration of the movie practically unchallenged. That works in the beginning showing how much of an unstoppable force he his. But this absolute power that is provided to him, runs the risk of being weary. Thankfully, the movie is over before this issue manages to derail the experience, with no unnecessary time spent in dragging it out.

Brightburn is the kind of movie you want to watch to bring some joy into a mundane day, and wonderfully it never falls into the trap of being a bad movie.  The reason? It knows exactly what it is, and never tries to pretend that it is something more grander or deeper, and therein probably lies its real strength.

P.S.- The end sequence indicates that we may be staring at an attempt of beginning yet another cinematic universe. Brightburn was innovative and fresh, but will trying to repeat it over and over actually be any good. We have gotta wait and see…..
